What is adult medicine?

Adult medicine at Asheville Medicine & Pediatrics involves preventive medical care including physicals and wellness exams, chronic care follow-up visits, as well as sick visits. The goal of adult medicine is to keep you as healthy as possible, reduce symptoms of illnesses, and prevent serious medical complications from arising. We will partner with you to make a comprehensive plan to keep you as healthy as possible.

What are physical/wellness exams versus chronic care visits?

Annual wellness visits and complete physicals are designed to keep you healthy and detect diseases or illnesses before they become serious. Chronic care visits help you manage a disease.

Physicals and wellness exams

During a physical or wellness exam, we review your medical and social history and counsel you about preventive services, such as how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. We check your height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, and other vital signs. We also offer:

  • Weight loss counseling

  • Smoking cessation

  • Diet and exercise plans

  • Contraception management

  • Osteoporosis prevention

  • Vaccinations

We may also screen you for chronic diseases like diabetes, high cholesterol, and breast, cervical, colorectal, and prostate cancers.

Illness and disease management

If you have an illness or chronic health issue, we address medical problems during a sick visit or chronic care appointment. Examples of health issues we can manage include:

  • Diabetes

  • Coronary artery disease

  • High blood pressure

  • High cholesterol

  • Congestive heart failure

  • Chronic lung diseases

  • Arthritis

  • Osteoporosis

  • Hormone imbalance

  • Depression

Our physician reviews your medical history, checks your vital signs, and will listen to any complaints you may have. We may use blood tests, throat swabs, urine tests, or imaging procedures to properly manage an illness or disease. Our Asheville Medicine & Pediatrics team uses up-to-date, evidence-based procedures and treatments.

Which treatment will I require?

Our doctor may suggest specific treatments to reduce symptoms or manage a disease. We might recommend:

  • Weight loss

  • Other lifestyle changes

  • Medications

  • Supplements

  • Alternative treatments

Your individualized treatment helps restore your health and quality of life. Our team refers you to specialists whenever necessary.
