What is newborn care?

Newborn care at Asheville Medicine & Pediatrics involves expert medical care during your baby’s first month of life. We are all board-certified pediatricians. We believe in evidence-based newborn care to ensure your newborn stays as healthy as possible and help your doctor detect health issues early before serious complications arise. Our team provides complimentary pediatric interviews for all expecting parents.

Our physicians have extensive experience dealing with newborn care, such as breastfeeding problems, jaundice, sleep issues, and common newborn medical problems. Choosing a pediatrician is an important step in your child’s future. If you are expecting a baby, we would welcome the opportunity to meet with you and discuss your future delivery, and anticipated pediatric care, and answer any questions you may have. This pediatric interview is offered at no cost so you can make sure you find a good fit for you and your family.

New parents need not fret over exposure to illness while in the office. Newborns are given priority and are never asked to wait in the waiting room, but instead are brought directly to a clean patient room.

What should I expect right after delivery?

We would like to see your newborn three to five days after they are born for a newborn care appointment. Right after you deliver your baby, newborn care begins. During the first evaluation, one of our pediatricians:

  • Checks your baby’s length, weight, and head circumference

  • Completes a physical exam

  • Monitors your baby’s skin color and activity

  • Checks your newborn’s temperature, heart rate, and breathing

  • Checks the umbilical cord area

  • Offers advice about what to expect before the next appointment

  • Discusses nutrition

Your pediatrician answers any questions you have about caring for your newborn and counsels you about newborn care at home.

Our team lets you know how often to schedule your baby’s visits. You can schedule appointments more often if you have concerns.

When you’re seeking top-quality care for a new addition, your baby is in good hands with our board-certified Asheville Medicine & Pediatrics team.
